What to watch for
Secondary school assumes the times tables are automatic. They are almost never re-taught. A child arriving in Year 7 still working them out will find algebra harder than it needs to be, because algebra is arithmetic with letters in it.

How often should my child practise?
Five to ten minutes a day beats one long session at the weekend. Number facts are stored through repeated quick recall, so little and often is what actually moves a child forward.
