Singapore maths already asks children to visualise, which is exactly what the soroban trains, and it is why abacus works as maths enrichment here rather than as extra drill.

    Primary 1 and Primary 2

    Ages 7 to 8

    Every soroban rod is a five and four ones, so 7 is seen as 5 and 2, and number bonds become something a child can move. It is the same part-whole thinking the bar model builds on later.

    Number bonds and addition and subtraction within 100 start to feel obvious rather than memorised.

    Ages 9 to 10

    Multiplication and division on the rods, then on a soroban pictured in the head. Most children begin calculating this way after about a year of steady practice.

    Tables and multi-step word problems stop being slowed down by the arithmetic inside them.

  3. Primary 5 to 6

    Ages 11 to 12

    Speed and accuracy under timed conditions. PSLE Paper 1 is sat without a calculator, so fast, reliable mental arithmetic is doing real work rather than saving a few seconds.

    A steadier pace on non-calculator work, and attention left over for the reasoning the questions are actually testing.

Many Singapore children already have weekend tuition. Abacus is not more of the same: it trains one skill, mental computation, in two short live classes a week, and each of the ten levels ends with a graded test so you can see the progress.

Most families start between Primary 1 and Primary 4. A Primary 5 starter moves through the first levels faster.

Every family gets a private parent portal. After most classes the instructor writes you a note about your child, and the attendance, the timed tests and the certificates sit beside it.

    Set 47 + 25 with no wrong moves, and used the index finger for the top bead without a reminder. Two minutes a day on “take five, add one” before Monday.

    A slow start, then the steadiest hand in the batch on the last round. Ask her to show you a sum on the beads tonight.

Enrichment, not another tuition slot
Tuition usually works through the school syllabus again. Abacus works on one thing underneath it, mental computation, with a physical tool and then a pictured one. It is a different kind of hour from tuition: beads, speed, and short levels that each end in a graded test.
Calculator-free papers
PSLE Mathematics Paper 1 is taken without a calculator, and so are many school tests before it. A child who calculates quickly and reliably in their head has more of the paper's time for the heuristics questions that decide the grade.
Fitting it into the week
Classes run in Singapore time, after school on weekdays or at the weekend, around CCAs and tuition. Two live one-hour classes a week, about fifteen minutes of practice on other days, and the fee for Singapore in writing.
