Worth pointing out

Patterns in the 11 times table

  • Up to 11 x 9, the answer is simply the digit written twice: 33, 44, 55, 66.
  • After 11 x 9 the pattern changes, which is where most children come unstuck.

The easiest way to learn it

For two-digit numbers whose digits add to 9 or less, split the digits and add them in the middle. For 11 x 12, split 1 and 2, add them to get 3, and place it between: 132. For 11 x 14, split 1 and 4, add to get 5, giving 154. When the two digits add to 10 or more the extra ten carries left, so 11 x 19 is 209 rather than anything you can read straight off.

The fact children get wrong

11 x 12 is 132. Children who have learned only the repeat-the-digit rule tend to answer 1212 or freeze. The splitting method above is the fix.

On the abacus

Eleven on a soroban is ten plus one, so the answer is the number shifted one rod left plus the number itself, which makes the split-and-add trick obvious rather than magical.
