Worth pointing out

Patterns in the 8 times table

  • The last digit drops by two at every step, running 8, 6, 4, 2, then 0 before it repeats.
  • Each answer is twice its partner in the fours and four times its partner in the twos.

The easiest way to learn it

Double three times. For 8 x 6, double 6 to 12, double to 24, double to 48. Three easy doublings replace one fact your child does not yet know.

The fact children get wrong

Children reach for 56 when they want 48, because 8 x 7 and 8 x 6 sit right beside each other. Doubling three times never lets you down here.
