Worth pointing out

Patterns in the 9 times table

  • Up to 9 x 10, the digits of every answer add to nine. 18 gives 9, 27 gives 9, 81 gives 9.
  • Up to 9 x 10, the tens digit is always one less than the number you multiplied by. 9 x 7 starts with 6, so the answer is 63.

The easiest way to learn it

Multiply by ten and subtract the number. For 9 x 7, ten sevens are 70, take away 7, and you have 63. This works for every multiplier, including past ten.

The fact children get wrong

Two answers get swapped here, 54 and 63, from 9 x 6 and 9 x 7. The rules above catch both: for 9 x 6 the tens digit must be 5, and 5 plus 4 makes 9.

On the abacus

Nine is one heaven bead and four earth beads, a full column. On a soroban, multiplying by nine is usually done as ten lots minus one lot, which is the same trick in beads.
